JANUARY1 - FEBRUARY 28

Let us help you create a Healthy Lawn Maintenance Program designed for your lawn by starting out the year with a soil test. Why guess what may or may not be best for your lawn and spend extra money when you could depend on a soil test and assistance from the Healthy Lawn Team for professional advice and planning. SOIL TEST: Pull approximately 1 pint of soil from 3 separate locations in your lawn. Take the soil from the top 3 in. of your soil samples. Mix all 3 samples and bring to the Healthy Lawn Center or a local cooperative extension offices.

RECOMMEND:  DEPENDS ON YOUR SOIL TEST RESULTS(LIME, ACIDIFIER AND OTHER NUTRIENTS AND SUPPLEMENTS TBD)

SPRING PRE-EMERGENT HERBICIDE

Apply a professional pre-emergent herbicide over your entire lawn. The pre-emergent herbicide will control crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail and other annual weeds. Apply when soil temps are 50 degrees for 3 to 4 consecutive days.

This application will prevent summer annual weeds such as crabgrass, goosegrass, and broadleaf weeds. Apply product at medium rate for 4.67 lbs product / 1,000 Sq. Ft. 50 lbs treats 10,700 Sq. Ft. (.25 acres). Irrigate immediately after application at 1/2"

LATER SPRING FERTILIZATION

15-0-15 Fertilizer

A bag of 15-0-15 fertilizer contains 15% nitrogen, 0% phosphorus, and 15% potassium by weight. The 30% that is remaining is other materials that make it easier to spread, and enhance or help carry the ingredients better. (Also called inert ingredients) 50 lbs feeds 7,400 sq. ft. Immediately irrigate after application at 1/2.

Only apply broad spectrum, professional fungicide or insecticide when the problem areas have been identified.

POST-EMERGENT BROADLEAF WEED CONTROL 

Post-emergent broadleaf weed control applied in liquid form, to control various broadleaf weeds like knotweed, and spurge. An acceptable broadleaf herbicide such as a 3-way herbicide with Trimec will be used for this application. (Apply postemergent weed control containing sethoxydim to control your grassy weeds or sedges if needed).

RECOMMEND: POST-EMERGENT BROADLEAF WEED CONTROL IN LIQUID FORM

TIP FROM THE PROS: Do not apply preemergence herbicides designed to control annual bluegrass if the lawn is to be overseeded with ryegrass.

 DECEMBER/FEBRUARY

 POST EMERGENT WEED CONTROL

 Apply post-emergent broadleaf herbicides as needed to control winter weeds such as chickweed, henbit, and hop clover. Selective herbicides like 3- way herbicide with Trimec, atrazine or simazine can be applied in November or December to lawns weeds. TIP FROM THE PROS: Don't apply cetain herbicides like 2,4-D that aren't labeled for use on centipede grass, because these chemicals can severly damage or even kill your lawn.  

RECOMMEND: 3- WAY HERBICIDE with TRIMEC, ATRAZINE OR SIMAZINE.
